Military Sexual Trauma Support Groups

Veteran’s Support Groups

Courage Support Group:
For male and female survivors of Military Sexual Trauma
(Veteran groups meet in separate men's and women's groups)

Purpose of this group: This 12 week group is designed to offer Military Sexual Trauma Survivors a safe and supportive environment in which to process their trauma experiences and the impact that it has in all facets of their lives.  Topics discussed can include the effects of sexual trauma, coping skills, skills to re-build self-esteem, ways trauma affects relationships and intimacy, strategies for developing trust in others and more. Veterans can provide and receive support from other members in an atmosphere of understanding and respect.

One former participant shared, "It was liberating.  I had been confined; imprisoned all these years…Just stepping in the room on the first day, I wasn't undercover anymore.  To have this level of freedom was like being able to exhale.  I stand no longer ashamed and no longer disconnected from the mental state of being a man. "Members report finding the group especially helpful in the areas of self-care and empathic support."

A second participant shared, "Being with other men made it so much easier. It was emotionally draining at times but well worth it. Being with other men in the Courage Group with the same trauma was so helpful. I learned how to accept my issue and am learning to thrive."
