VITAL Mission

Veterans Integration to Academic Leadership (VITAL) is a Veteran-centric, results-oriented collaboration between the VA Medical Center and higher education institutions. VITAL is an important component of a larger system of care available to Veterans that allows them to access and utilize services and resources to meet their mental health and educational needs. VITAL is committed to the advancement of best practices through community collaboration and research.

Services Offered through VITAL:


For Veterans

  • brief, evidence-based treatment for adjustment, stress, anger, depression, anxiety, sleep problems, and PTSD
  • assistance with enrolling and establishing care with the VA Medical Center
  • help with getting information and resources from providers within the VA and its affiliates including the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) and Vocational Rehabilitation and Education (VR&E)
  • support with university processes regarding academic actions and/or student conduct issues
  • referral and collaboration with university disability services concerning accommodations
  • support with obtaining and utilizing assistive technology devices such as hearing aids and screen reader software


For Academic Faculty/Staff/Institutions

  • education about military culture, VA system of care, Veterans benefits, psychological wounds of war (anger, depression, PTSD, anxiety), physical wounds of war (pain, hearing loss, traumatic brain injury), adjustment issues after deployment, and suicide prevention and awareness
  • consultation regarding Veteran-specific issues that impact academic performance and retention
  • collaboration with counseling centers who provide services for the unique mental health needs of Veterans
  • assistance with collaborating with staff at the VA Medical Center about Veteran-specific concerns, resources, and learning accommodations
