Cincinnati VA Medical Center
Compensated Work Therapy (CWT)
The goal of the CWT program is to assist Veterans who have a history of work-related problems with transitioning into competitive employment in the community. A CWT assignment provides Veterans with employment in a controlled environment, with the goal of helping them develop job skills and gain work experience. The CWT assignment may also be used as a work tolerance assessment. The length of stay in a CWT assignment is determined by the Veteran’s behavior and adherence to the program rules and expectations and is typically 3 months in duration.
- have a diagnosed mental health or substance abuse disorder and
- be receiving ongoing treatment for mental health and/or substance abuse
Basic period of eligibility:
Veterans are eligible to receive vocational services at any time. Veterans who have previously participated in a CWT assignment may not be eligible to participate in another CWT assignment until a 365-day time frame has elapsed, and may only be eligible to participate in a CWT assignment 2 times during a 4-year period.
What happens after eligibility is established?
Veterans will meet with a Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist (VRS) for a vocational assessment to determine a feasible vocational goal. Once a vocational goal is established, the Veteran will complete a vocational plan with the assistance of the VRS.
