Primary Care

What is Primary Care?
Primary Care allows you to identify one physician and team responsible for serving all of your healthcare needs. Our goal is that this coordinated effort will help you remain healthy and have a better quality of life.

Who are Primary Care Providers and what are Primary Care Teams?
A Primary Care Provider can be a physician, nurse practitioner, or
a physician's assistant. A Primary Care Team is a group of healthcare professionals responsible for coordinating your care. In addition to a physician, other members of the team may include nurses, pharmacists,

dietitians, and social workers, depending on your needs. You will be assigned a Primary Care Provider and a Primary Care Team.

Can I get medicines at the VA which are prescribed by a non-VA physician?
No. Prescription medications are potentially dangerous substances that require monitoring and evaluation for effectiveness, side effects, and potential interactions with your other medicines. If one of our providers writes a prescription, that provider is responsible for the effects of that medicine. Your provider needs to see you on a regular basis to monitor your health and to write your prescriptions. In order to get medicines at the VA, your primary healthcare must be monitored by the VA.

Can I get primary care here and see a private physician?
Yes. However, we would like to discourage you from doing this because it is important to coordinate your care and medications. This is easier if you see physicians within our system. If you do see a private physician, you need to bring copies of your health records each time you have an appointment with your Primary Care Team.
