| The
Department of Housing and Urban Development/
Veteran Supported Housing Program is a joint
effort between HUD and the VA to assist homeless
veterans with reintegration into the Greater
Cincinnati community. By assisting veterans
who have a mental illness and/or history of
substance abuse, the veterans are offered
support in obaining their highest level of
independence. VA case management is provided
in a combination of in-home and group counseling
sessions, while HUD (Section 8) provides a
rental subsidy. the VA case managers assist
the veterans in obtaining the housing voucher,
locating an appropriate apartment and basic
apartment items. The program depends on donation
of couches, tables, beds, linens and kitchen
items to assist veterans in furnishing their
apartments. The HUD/VASH Program begins intensive
case management while the veteran is actively
receiving VA services and continues while
the veteran is living in a subsidized apartment.
VA staff in both residential and outpaitent
clinics can make referrals to HUD/VASH. Current
HUD/VASH housing options include individual
vouchers in Hamilton County, Kenton County
and Newport. A Supportive Housing Unit provides
2-three-bedroom townhouses that are shared
by six veterans. All HUD/VASH housing options
can be initiated with a single referral.
HUD/VASH II
The HUD/VASH program obtained an additional
20 extra housing vouchers in Northern KY.
MOU’s have been developed with Campbell
County, Newport and Kenton County Housing
Authorities.
SUPPORTIVE HOUSING
The Supportive Housing (SH) program is a collaborative
between the VA and the Cincinnati Metropolitan
Housing Authority (CMHA). SH veterans rent
2 CMHA townhouses (3 bedrooms each) and are
case managed by HUD/VASH clinicians. Veterans
must maintain sobriety and abide by HUD/VASH
SH rules.
TENANT BASED RENTAL
ASSISTANCE
The Tenant Based Rental Assistance (TBRA)
program is a collaborative between the VA
and the Ohio Valley Goodwill Industries (OVGI)
to provide veterans rental assistance and
case management services by HUD/VASH clinicians.
TBRA funds may be used (1) to provide rental
assistance to help pay the cost of monthly
rent and utility costs, and (2) to pay security
deposit assistance to tenants regardless of
whether rental and utility subsidies are being
provided.
