Reporting of Results:

1) Tests are completed in a timely manner based on the type of test and the medical urgency. As soon as a test is finished, the result is recorded in the patient’s record. Thus, the patient’s provider has test results right away.

2) Any result, deemed critical in nature, is called right away to the patient’s provider.

Lab Management If you want to know why a test has been ordered, the nature of a test or how to prepare for a test please call the provider, or see “frequently asked questions”, below. If you want to know the results of a test, please call your provider or “Release of Information” 513-861-3100 at extension 6455.

Frequently Asked Questions:
1) What are lab tests?
Lab tests are medical tests that analyze samples of a person’s blood, body fluids, tissues or wastes.

2) Why are lab tests ordered by a health care provider?
Lab tests are ordered for health screening, to diagnose medical conditions, to assess prognosis, and/or to monitor treatment.

3) Who performs the lab testing?
Laboratory tests are performed by staff with special education, training and skills needed to perform their jobs.

Patient Phlebotomy

4) Why do some tests need to be repeated?
The reasons vary. If the results of a test are not clear or not expected, repeat tests and sometimes other tests may be ordered to help confirm results and/or for follow-up. If a patient is on medicine, regular tests may be needed to ensure proper dosage and/or to check for side effects.

5) Do I call the laboratory for my results?
No. Call your healthcare provider for results of your tests. The provider will review the results with you and explain what the results mean in terms of your diagnosis and/or treatment plan.

You can obtain a copy of the results by calling “Release of Information” at extension 6455.

6) How long before my physician receives my test results?
This depends on how your doctor ordered the test and the length of time it takes to perform testing. There are different types of orders:

  • STAT (i.e. Urgent): Tests to be done within one hour
  • ROUTINE: Tests most often done in 1 to 7 days
  • SEND OUTS: These results can take any where from 2 days to 2 weeks

7) Where do I report to have my blood drawn?
Report to Blood Drawing, Room C249
Open: 7:00 – 4:30 pm, Mon- Fri; 9:00 – 2:30 pm, Saturday

8) Do I need to be fasting for all lab tests?
Not all tests require fasting. More accurate results are obtained if patients fast for these tests: glucose, triglyceride and lipid profile.

9) How do I collect a 24 hour urine specimen?
Ask the provider who ordered the test to give you a detailed instruction card.

The important thing to remember is to:

  • discard (not collect) the first morning urine
  • collect all urines thereafter
  • include the last urine obtained 24 hours later (at the same time as the 1st discarded one).
  • keep the collection container refrigerated at all times until you bring it to the lab.

10) How do I collect a stool specimen for the following tests?

Culture (C&S)

  • Place stool in orange capped container up to the red line

Ova & Parasite (O&P)

  • Place stool in blue and pink capped containers up to the red line

C. difficile

  • Place stool in empty, sterile container provided.
  • Keep refrigerated until you bring it to the lab.
