PGY1 Pharmacy Resident Training Program

This PGY1 pharmacy residency program is a one-year postgraduate training program which can be individualized to meet the professional interest of each applicant. The program is set up with the following structure:

  • Three months of primary care where the resident will work with clinical pharmacy preceptors and the primary care physicians to provide disease state management for patients under a collaborative practice agreement for a variety of chronic disease states including diabetes, hyperlipidemia, hypertension.
  • Three months of acute care where the resident will round with an inpatient medical team providing a variety of pharmaceutical care and work closely with the clinical pharmacy preceptors in these areas. The acute care services will include internal medicine, critical care and a third acute care elective.
  • Four months of electives with one being an acute care elective. These electives will allow each resident to focus on their own areas of professional interest and may include learning experiences in oncology, surgery, drug policy development/pharmacoecomonics, pharmacy practice management, HIV, Hepatitis C, research and clinical trials.
  • In addition to the above, each resident will have a required month of administration/practice management; teaching, mentoring and precepting responsibilities for Pharm. D. students throughout the year; completion of a final research project and a limited staffing/service commitment.
  • As part of this residency program, each resident will complete a concurrent program through the University of Cincinnati Winkle College of Pharmacy for a separate teaching certificate.

The resident will be appointed as a pharmacy employee of the Cincinnati VA Medical Center and benefits will include:

  • $39,807 stipend

    Application Requirements: United States Citizen, licensed pharmacist (or in process of licensure), letter of intent, completed application, curriculum vitae, copy of all college transcripts, three letters of recommendation and on-site interview.
